Get on the website and click launch game. Then log into your account and look at the worlds. Select the one you want and press enter. Place your colony. Not really that hard...

But I'm guessing you might mean what to do at the start of an era instead? In that case, it's always nice to be in a pre planned alliance but if you aren't then just request to be in a top 12 alliance from the start. Some tips,

Buy reds - They give you big advantages. You can get resources or just decorate your colony and avatar frame.

Vote every day - At this link for 35 blue tokens http://www.battledawn.com/?p=vote

Always boost workers before anything else - Workers give you score and power. 25 workers = 1 score.

Take as many resource ops as you can - Use spam squads to take them, they give you resources as evident by their name and increase worker growth.

Remember - Alliance Score = Combined score of all alliance colonies

Colony Score
1 crystal = 20 score
1 power = 10 score
1 relic = 1000 score

Power
25 workers = 1 power
10 infantry = 1 power
10 vehicles = 2 power
10 tanks = 3 power
1 Alliance owned resource mine = 0.2 power for all alliance members. (Does stack)

Crystals are found when you reach 30 power.

And most importantly BE ACTIVE!

Good luck ;)

I suggest focusing on rushing farm. This will get you more resource income quick compared to rushing metal. Workers are your main priority in the game. making mass units wont come until you have ranged upgrade but have a few units at your base to protect. Also rush to try and get into an alliance early. You gain many bonuses.

Yeah along the lines of what he said. Focus on structures more than units. Once you have all the structures you can do all the things you want with your units and be able to sustain your army better. By the way, right off the bat get the farm; metal, and oil structures up to level 3.

Boost light worker, light metal, light oil, heavy worker(if you got reds) on tick zero, then keep boosting light worker after 12 tick cooldown, heavy after 24 tick cooldown, till you cross 900 worker mark, that will put you in a good spot at first 100 tick... Oil and metal boost depend on what world you playing.. How fast you need to build... Stay active like hell for first 100 tick.. Sleep over keyboard.

I posted this a while ago on another thread... Its not perfect but its a good general strategy to start. I would suggest you go read Milan's guide.

Spoiler:
Here is a rough innitial strategy from tick 1.

1. Place colony in a location surrounded by resource OPs (and preferably unalligned players as well)

2. Boost Heavy metal, oil and workers, Boost light metal and workers.

3. Build up:
Farm - 3................Chassis - 3
Metal - 3...............Tech - 3
oil - 3....................Scan - 2
energy - 2..............Radar - 3
Conversion - 1

4. Build up spams to launch at resource OPs, but dont rush too many units.

5. Wait for tick 1 to roll. Hope for a mass boost on tick 2.

6. With mass boost build Chassis - 4, Tech - 4, and Metal - 4.

7. Hunt people with spams until tick 13. Tick 13 - light workers and metal

8. Tick 25 - Heavy workers and metal, light workers and metal.... Build 2 squads of ranged tanks.

9. Tick 31 - Build 10 armored tanks, start hitting larger infantry targets.

10. After that its all rock 'n' roll from there. No need to keep boosting metal if you start out with good resource OP control. Maybe a workers boost here or there to keep you up.

The biggest thing is to build range fast, be active, and dont overextend yourself. Losing your army early round doesnt ruin your round, but it certainly slows you down.
