When you upgrade these structures, is this only applying to watch towers/radar posts? Or will it help spot incoming ships/squads on your main base if you don't have any watch towers/radar posts?

What purpose do watch towers serve then?

They allow you to see attacks incoming. Like nukes and squads that may be outside of your colony's radar coverage. They allow you to see every outpost that is located around your watch tower also. If you don't have any radar coverage, someone could be attacking you and you wouldn't be able to see it coming.

He meant watch tower/radar outposts, I believe. The colony serves as a settlement/training base/radar/gate portal, so the colony does get radar coverage. However, watch tower/radar outposts EXTEND that coverage to wherever the outpost is located.

1. Is there an easy way to figure out what my total radar range is? Will there be gaps in the range, or will it extend to the farthest distance possible from the furthest watch tower that you have? Or does it have a series of overlapping concentric circles?

2. Why do people build so many outposts, many times outposts that are not even defended? Outposts do not extend the colony radar range right? Only the colony itself getting watch tower upgrades, and the watch towers themselves will extend the range right?

1 if you zoom out you should see a white circle centered on you colony/castle or watch tower this is your sight
there are two types of watch towers

one are structures built from the colony/castle screen there are only 5 of them each increases your colony/castle range

the second are op that have been upgraded to watch towers these have a separate range of sight centered on the watch tower op they do not increases the range of the colony/castle sight they just have their own

2 op used to get specialised op like watch towers or gates so they may just be waiting to upgrad them or just to take up space so others cant build there

1. Overlapping concentric circles?

2. People will upgrade them. Some newbs attempt to build settlements to relocate but don't defend them. Other times people don't feel like diverting their main force to defend an outpost. (Guilty!!!) Sometimes other people just take the outpost and prepare to raze it. (Guilty again!!!!)
