We all know what is happening right now, but we are still using them as a reliable power source. Are they the best power source, or is danger of radiation good enough to have them frowned upon?

I think lessons need to be learned after the explosions/radiation in Japan. But, I don't see a sustainable future without them. On the other hand we don't have infinite sources of nuclear power (similar to running out of oil). Even so, I think as a temporary solution (before we move to totally sustainable energy sources) they are needed as they can be fitted easily into the current energy grids.

You cant live without them. Yes, when mishaps happen they can turn out to be deadly, but the only other reliable source of power, is the renewable sources of energy. But the technology is still not developed enough for large scale power production. So, yes they are still needed, though security needs to be tightened.

umm. Nuclear powerplants will be a good source when you placed it on the right place where it would be safe

The radiation from the Japanese nuclear plants aren't as severe as the media is proclaiming. Multiple safety experts have proven this if you look for more reliable sources i.e. not news shows.
As for nuclear power plants being an energy source of course it's not the safest or wisest but it's a very helpful source that if maintained can help produce a susceptible amount of power. No energy source will be safe like Routhy had mentioned in a previous post you made about the same topic (ironic double posting) that each power source also had multiple harmful effects to the environment. But there's always a price to pay for something.

I just think we should rely on them less, and focus a little more on renewable energy sources.

The first radiation has now reached Europe (i.e. Iceland) but is at a minuscule level, way too low to hurt anyone. I think the figure was at something like one millionth of the level found after Grenoble. Shows just how far reaching the effects are though.

O.o The Philippines is nearer yet I don't hear any news like that here. Why is that?

Dude, cause we are awesome! Germany even frowned their Nuke Plants by 2020 but i think we should continue but with better facilities. The Chernobyl did not have good facilities. There should be a backup cooling system, pills with workers and a third layer of protection.

Really, why don't failsafe systems work when they're expected to? Really...it feels as if failsafes should not be needed anymore. =(
