There are a number of different ways to enter the water from a boat. A backwards entry is usually used on a small boat that has no deck and has a relatively low freeboard ( distance between the gunwale and the water) like a rigid inflatable boat such as a zodiac.
It has nothing to do with masks staying on. They can pop off doing this type of entry as well. Your console and dingly dangly gear can still whack you in the face if not secured so that's not a real reason to use a backwards over a giant stride either.
Besides boat design, you use whatever type of entry that's appropriate for the conditions and your equipment configuration.

wait does it mean the height is half the base for the house or the triangle?
It clearly states that the height of the house is half that of its base.
Base is 12, so Height is 6.
Now we 1/4 everything 12=3 6= 1.5
1/2 base times height = 1.5 times 1.5 = 2.25
