Do any of you know why some people get a ridiculous sentence, like 500 years in prison? That's not justice. Why don't they pursue an alternative? Even if the death penalty is illegal in that state/Country or just not an option...

I know that such a severe sentence totally eliminates any chance of parole... but they already have life without parole... I'm really confused.

Capital punishment keeps serious crime rates down, for proof look at the statistics for nations 5, 10, 15, 20 years after it was abolished.

With the new healthcare laws, these ridiculous sentences are actually the predicted lifespan of these law-breakers.

The 500 years just add up based on the number of counts the person is charged with. So for a murder and rape the person might be charged with - Homicide,Rape,Illegal entry and assault etc., Each of these counts will be awarded a specific punishment (number of years). They add up to 500 years. Basically it just means that its for a life span.

Oh Please. Correlation is not causation. How do you attribute crime with lack of capital punishment. Why cant there be other reasons like, poverty, the economy crashing, immigration issues etc? Come on.

getting mentioned c: I feel loved.

The high sentences are meant to demonstrate the degree of the crime. You can get 15 years for a crime, but say you had multiple instances of the crime commited, the years stack. Same things apply to civil cases such as the music industry who charged the single woman millions by stacking hundreds of thousands of damages sued being repeated and stacked based on number of items downloaded/shared.

Its just a legal technicality, once life without parole is in place, the criminal rots irregardless how many lifetimes you put on him

demographics play a much bigger part in keeping crime down, compare homicide rates in USA with homicide rates in other developed countries with no capital punishment. Heck, norway has some of the best crime figures in the world despite all the controversy over brevik's jail, the system works.

I would like to see your proof.

http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/cr ... 0tbl01.xls
US 4.8 homicides per 100 000 people

http://www.ssb.no/english/subjects/03/0 ... 01-en.html
Norway 0.68 homicides per 100 000 people

effectively 6-7x more homicides in USA than Norway.

Yeah but shouldn't the punishment fit the crime? Murder 2 people - life in prison. Mass murder - they get like 400 years in prison. What I'm saying is the extra years don't mean anything. Shouldn't they pursue alternative ways of punishing people?

for what purpose, what more can you take away then their freedoms for the rest of their life?

they will be interred indefinitely. I cant see how to make it worse without resorting to torture or cruel and unusual punishment which a modern justice system doesnt allow.
