I'm new to the game, just joined under an hour ago, any tips on how to advance and what's worthwhile investing my time in upgrading etc? Any tips would be greatly appreciated - thanks.

There are some good guides there

Also on there is the "Adopt-A-Newb-Center" that will alow you to find someone to mentor you. This is a great way to learn the ins and out of the game
