50 000 have died over 6 years from the mexican drug warhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican_Drug_War - highest estimate of deaths is at 100 thousand, official estimate is 54 thousand. Compare that with 4487 US soldiers killed in Iraq which is a protracted multinational engagement lasting 8 years with 110 - ~500 thousand as the death toll.
So... regarding the legalisation of not just softer drugs like marijuana but opiates, heroin etc. There clearly has to be a better way around the issue than the method we currently have in demonising drug users and drugs in general.
