What would you say is the best army build. Should I focus on infantry over cavalry? What's the point of ranged? How can I survive after losing my protection and how can I sustain and Army.

No Chassis is the best, they simply just have advantages over other chassis.
Range has the advantage of attacking first. It has a range of 3, so it will attack a turn before damage units (2 range) and armor units (1 range). Typically the best build would be to put range/armor in a 2:1 ratio (20 range, 10 armor) for inf, (10 range, 5 armor) for vehicles/cavalry, (7 range, 3 armor) for mechs/tanks/heavies.
Also, you should stick to one chassis type so that the enemy only has one advantage over you, not all three.

each chassis have its own strength and weakness. So it all comes down to your own, or your alliance's enemy and play style. Inf has an advantage to veh, but that doesn't mean an inf army will lose to veh. There are a lot more than chassis to contribute into battles like spies and nukes, activities, or even diplomacy,...

As Zealot said, the 2:1 ratio is probably your best bet (2 being the range) (1 being the armour) But if you still dont fell confident feel free to figure out your enemies chasis and play around with it in the battle simulator, thats one of the reasons it is there.

According to the simulator using 6 range, 1 damage, and 3 armor tanks in a squad beat 7 range and 3 armor squad. Also used 10 squads and it still won. Seems using damage helps
Also done a test with vehicles. 3 squads of vehicles beat tanks but if you use the one damage combination then you kill more vehicles but its still a loss.

Zealot put it pretty well. But honestly just experiment with what you like best till it works. But remember no army is perfect

I know I'm saying this really late, but i'll but this in here just incase.
Typically, there is no perfect chassis or army, as the circumstances and environment around are always different. you could sometimes begin with strong players around you or just new players. but to know what's best for you, Get to know the players around you and, especially, your enemies too.
For example, scan and spy the players around you and get to know their armies. if Player A and Player B around you all have a total of 30 Infantry and 20 Vehicles Units, you should get what's best against infantry and Vehicles. in this case, vehicles can be done by infantry Since it has 25% bonus damage although you need many infantry. you also need to base your units with their weapons but i'm not going to go into that to make this short.
Basically, Know your Surroundings and Base your Army around that. Don't eat spaghetti with a spoon or it's gonna be a hard time for you.
Hope this helps. PM if anything.
