If too many people go for a wreckage at the same time, and your units are doomed to fail, they will automatically turn back and save themselves.

A B and C are from different alliances
They all attack D (a newb) at the same eta
They together kill D
A sends 3 units
B sends 2 units
C sends 1 unit
C's squad retreats while A and B fight for it

That is usually when you failed to kill any opponents units don't know the actual percentages though.

basically when there are more than 2 alliance attacking another alliance, they first join and kill the defender first. Then the weaker ones retreat and let the two strongest ones fight to get the spoil.
