If you want to get medals you have to finish an era in the top 10 to get medals.
1st - Gold Medal
2nd - Silver Medal
3rd - Bronze Medal
4th-10th is a blue ribbon.
Same works for the Best of all times however the backgroud color will be red and in the champion ship it will be green.
Keep in mind your personal score needs to be in top 10 to get a medal not your alliance.

And to extend on Casablan's explanation, you need to beat the top ten all time scores. By doing so you will get a different colored medal for 1-3 (still gold, silver bronze, but different colored ribbon behind it.) And for 4th-10th you will get a red ribbon, instead of a blue one to differentiate.
