Math's a natural logic, so we just discover it. Geometry and variables were already there, so we just discover them and find out what we could do with them.

are you sure our number system is based off 10
math you be very different if we used base 60, 12, 4 ect

Actually, I believe we did both.
We discovered math by our surroundings, then invented ways to express it.

well we discovered math and invented ways to make math easier.
say the sum of 2 cubes
A cubed + B cubed = (A + B)(A squared - AB + B squared)
we learned patterns and special products throught basic math and now we have: -Algebra -Basic Math -Calculus -Geometry ETC.

I question math a lot though. For instance:
if a = b and b = c then a = c
What the hell does that accomplish?! Why not just say a instead of waisting a space for a meaningless equation that doesn't get you anywhere?

What the hell does that accomplish?! Why not just say a instead of waisting a space for a meaningless equation that doesn't get you anywhere? its very useful if you are trying to prove something or equate to find a solution, that is just the basic format but say you are doing some nuclear physics using the following equations: F= (-GMm)/(rr) and F= (1/2)mvv and F=Qq/(4(pie)(epsilon zero)(rr) you can clearly see that given the mass (m) and velocity (v) that you have the force (F) acting on an object and if this object is stationary you are able to work out all the other variables as G, pie, epsilon zero are universal constants. Therefore if you know (1/2)mvv=F and F= (-GMm)/(rr) then (1/2)mvv= (-GMm)/(rr) which is very useful as we can cancel the m's to make it that (1/2)vv= (-GM)/(rr) this then with rearrangements and further subbing in allows us to work out alot of data about the object. Mathematicians simply state such rules from old greek thought experiments as it allows 'proof'. I hope that has helped you to a certain extent. Note:- (vv) and (rr) were used as i was unable to find a 'to the power of 2 or squared button) -(pie) was also used for this same reason -/ means divided by With regards to the original question, math is the natural language of the universe and therefore we discover it, we chose base 10 as it was the most efficient at explaining what we discovered (us mathematicians are lazy and like to keep it simple where we can) so to those ends we discover maths but we invent it in the way we write it down and comprehend it-everything is relevant right.
