Not really. If you live a rich life, with relatively low risk and good health. You can have 1 child and feel safe in assuming that he/she will grow up and survive into adulthood.
If you are the opposite and live in poverty in a poor african country, having 8 children in the hopes that at least 1 of them will survive into adulthood is what our natural instincts tell us to do.
In the natures mind;
Survival mode = we
need children
Safe mode = I don't want a child - I want to have a child now
